Transfagarasan Highway Day Trip (+ Fagaras Citadel)

The Transfagarasan road was labeled as “the best driving road in the world” by Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson! It is the second highest altitude paved road in Romania and connects the historic regions of Wallachia and Transylvania. It cuts the southern Carpathians exactly between the Moldoveanu (2544 m) and Negoiu (2535 m), the two highest peaks of Romania. It was built in the early 1970s by the communist regime, as a strategic military route. 6000 tons of dynamite have been used for digging the mountain. 40 people lost their lives during the building process.

This road trip begins in Brasov. We drive to Cartisoara and from there we start our ascent on the Transfagarasan highway. Along the way we stop to admire the Balea Waterfall. Other stops for photos and sightseeing are included along the way. At the top we reach an altitude of 2042 meters.

We drive through the Balea tunnel and also explore the first top kilometers of the South side until the Capra waterfall. Here you can taste and buy traditional Romanian cheese and meat products like deer and wild-boar salami!

Next, we return to the top of the pass and we visit walk around the Balea Lake and aim for the best photos at the top of the pass! There is time for souvenirs and street-food.

The return trip is done on the same side of the mountain, back to Brasov. We do a drive by and a short stop at the Fagaras citadel to learn more about the medieval defense system of Transylvania.

Important: during winter months, the Transfagarasan road is closed. This day trip can be still organized though. Instead of a drive to the top, we will use the cable car as means of transport and enjoy some spectacular views. A walk at the Balea plateau will be organized along with a hot tea or meal at the Bale cottage. The return trip is on the same side of the mountain.
